Burnout Isn’t Just Being Tired

Think burnout is just exhaustion? Think again. Burnout is a shape-shifter—it doesn’t look or feel the same for everyone. Sure, exhaustion is part of it, but burnout runs deeper, affecting us physically, emotionally, and mentally in ways that can feel overwhelming and, at times, invisible.

Let’s break it down:

1. How Burnout Manifests

For some, burnout whispers through physical symptoms:

  • Constant fatigue that sleep can’t fix.

  • Headaches or body aches with no clear cause.

  • A feeling of being perpetually drained.

For others, it’s emotional:

  • Losing joy in the things you once loved.

  • Feeling irritable or emotionally distant.

  • Struggling with a persistent sense of overwhelm or dread.

And sometimes, it’s mental:

  • Losing focus or forgetting things easily.

  • Struggling to complete even simple tasks.

  • Being stuck in a cycle of “I should be doing more” despite running on empty.

The truth? Burnout doesn’t always scream—it whispers. It sneaks into the little things, gradually pulling us away from the vibrant, engaged people we want to be.

2. Why Burnout Looks Different for Everyone

Your burnout story is uniquely yours because it’s shaped by your life, values, and experiences. For example:

  • A working mom might feel burnt out by the constant balancing act of career and family.

  • A business owner might hit a wall after months of hustle without a break.

  • Someone navigating a major life transition might feel disconnected and lost.

Here’s an example from my own life:

Over the weekend, my husband and I traveled back from Burlington, VT, where we had attended my best friend’s daughter’s wedding. The weather was clear in Vermont, but in Philadelphia, where our connecting flight awaited, a snowstorm caused delays. We missed our connecting flight—the last one that night. The airline booked us on a flight to Norfolk instead, over an hour’s drive from Richmond. However, that flight was delayed due to lack of crew. After waiting for over two hours, we opted to take a morning flight. All flights to Richmond were fully booked, so we flew to Norfolk again the next day. Once there, we had to find ground transportation to Richmond, eventually renting a car for $99. Throughout this ordeal, I focused on staying calm, grounded, and optimistic, and—surprisingly—my husband did the same.

While this wasn’t burnout per se, it reminded me how crucial it is to manage stress and energy reserves in challenging situations. Burnout often sneaks in during prolonged, high-stress periods when we’re not as mindful of our well-being.

3. Why It’s Important to Listen to the Signs

Ignoring burnout won’t make it go away. In fact, dismissing the signs can lead to deeper physical, emotional, or mental health challenges. The good news? Burnout is your body and mind’s way of saying, “Hey, something needs to change.”

4. Preventing Burnout: Steps You Can Take

Prevention is key when it comes to burnout. Here are some actionable steps to help safeguard your energy and well-being:

  • Set clear boundaries: Learn to say no and protect your time for rest and recovery.

  • Prioritize self-care: Schedule regular activities that recharge you, whether it’s exercise, reading, or spending time with loved ones.

  • Take breaks: Incorporate short breaks throughout your day to reset and refocus.

  • Foster connections: Lean on your support system and share your feelings with trusted friends or a coach.

  • Evaluate your workload: Regularly assess whether your responsibilities align with your capacity and values.
