YEARNING for CHANGE

On August 4th, 2023, I left New York City, a place I called home for 26 years. The city, with its relentless energy and endless opportunities, had shaped much of who I was. But as the years passed, especially during the isolation brought by Covid-19, my husband and I began contemplating a significant life change. Like many others, we found ourselves yearning for something different—a quieter life, closer to nature, and a chance to redefine what success and happiness meant to us.

How It Evolved

The idea of leaving Manhattan had been brewing for some time, particularly as we approached our 60s. The questions began to surface: What will life look like moving forward? What do we really want out of this next chapter? It was during this period that I started my journey with the Architect Registration Exam (ARE), fueled by powerful life coaching that helped me overcome limiting beliefs and shift my mindset. I passed three exams in one year, a testament to the power of belief and focused effort. But more importantly, it was a stepping stone to realizing that my true calling was in helping others overcome their own obstacles and design lives filled with purpose.

In November 2021, amidst the bustle of Manhattan and the demands of my full-time job as an architectural project manager, I invested in myself and pursued a coaching certification program, and 6 months later, I became a certified life coach. This decision marked the beginning of a new career path, one that aligned with my evolving definition of success. It wasn’t just about professional achievements anymore—it was about living authentically, pursuing passions, and helping others do the same.

As my husband and I entertained the idea of leaving Manhattan behind, we focused on Virginia, where he co-owns a large rustic house on the Chesapeake Bay with his younger brother. This house had been a gathering place for family and friends for over 30 years, and it felt like the perfect place to start anew. In the spring of 2023, after months of research, we visited Richmond, VA, and quickly realized it was where we wanted to build our future. We explored the neighborhoods, talked to locals, and imagined what life could be like there. By the end of the trip, our minds were made up.

Bumps Along The Way

The process of selling our Manhattan co-op was anything but simple. It took nearly four months, filled with the usual complexities of New York real estate. When we finally left, we moved directly to the house on the bay, thinking we’d find a new home within three months. Instead, it took seven. During this time, we stayed at the bay house, working on necessary repairs and settling into a slower pace of life. I had resigned from my NYC position, and while my coaching business was growing, it wasn’t yet at a point where it could fully sustain us. This period was a lesson in patience, resilience, and the importance of trusting the process.

After countless open houses and three failed bids, we finally became the owners of a historic townhouse in Richmond’s Fan district. Moving in on the first Monday of March 2024 marked the beginning of our new life, filled with possibilities and the chance to redefine success on my own terms.

Redefining Success and Navigating Change

The journey of leaving New York and starting over in Virginia was more than just a physical move; it was a profound shift in mindset and priorities. Here are some key takeaways I’d like to share with you:

  1. Facing Fear in the Face of Change
Change, even when desired, can be terrifying. Whether it’s fear of being too old to start over, concerns about financial security, or uncertainty about what the future holds, these doubts can be paralyzing. But it's important to recognize that fear is a natural part of the process. The key is not to let it stop you from pursuing what truly matters to you.

  2. The Importance of Self-Assessment
Before making any big decision, take time for self-assessment. Why is there a nagging feeling in your head about making a change? What are you truly afraid of? What are your core values? And most importantly, what does success look like to you at this stage of your life? These questions require deep introspection, but the answers will guide you toward decisions that align with your true desires.

  3. Taking Small Steps Toward Your Goals
Once you’ve identified what you want, start taking small, consistent steps toward your goal. Your mind may resist, but this is where self-leadership comes in. It’s about becoming the person you need to be to achieve what you want. Each small step brings you closer to your new reality, even if the path isn’t always clear.

  4. Embracing Failure as Part of the Journey
Failure is inevitable when trying something new. But each failure provides valuable feedback, guiding you closer to success. Remember, the most successful people have failed more times than they’ve succeeded. It’s all part of the process.

  5. Prioritizing Self-Care
Amidst all the changes, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Regularly check in with yourself—how are you feeling? Ensure you get enough sleep, nourish your body, stay active, and take moments to breathe and center yourself. Give yourself grace during moments of doubt and judgment.

As I continue to build my life coaching business in Richmond, I’m reminded daily that success isn’t a static achievement—it’s an evolving concept that changes as we grow. For me, success now means living authentically, embracing change, and helping others do the same. If you’re contemplating a big life change, know that you’re not alone. It’s a journey filled with challenges, but it’s also an opportunity to redefine what success looks like for you and to live a life that truly aligns with your values and dreams.
