  • Freeze or Shutdown (Hypoarousal): Feeling drained, stuck, or emotionally detached.

The issue? Your nervous system doesn’t distinguish between real and perceived threats. A looming deadline, a tense conversation, or a packed schedule can activate the same stress response as a life-or-death situation.

This doesn’t mean adding elaborate routines to your schedule—it means incorporating small, daily choices that help your nervous system stay balanced.

How to Regulate Your Nervous System Through Self-Care

Different stress responses require different approaches. Here’s how to choose self-care practices based on what your body actually needs:

(1) If You Feel Stressed, Anxious, or Overwhelmed (Fight/Flight Mode)

Your goal: Calm your system so you can think clearly again.
Try:

  • Slow, deep breathing (4-7-8 breathing, physiological sigh)

  • Grounding techniques (walking barefoot, holding an object to center yourself)

  • Gentle movement (yoga, stretching, tai chi)

  • Soothing touch (hugging a loved one, self-massage)

(2) If You Feel Numb, Exhausted, or Unmotivated (Freeze/Shutdown Mode)

Your goal: Gently re-energize your system.
Try:

  • Upbeat movement (dancing, brisk walking, stretching)

  • Cold exposure (splashing cold water on your face)

  • Connection (engaging with a friend, cuddling a pet)

  • Laughter (watching a comedy, listening to an uplifting podcast)

(3) If You’re Just Trying to Build Resilience Daily

Your goal: Strengthen your nervous system’s ability to return to balance.

Try:

  • Intentional rest (not just collapsing from exhaustion)

  • Stillness practices (meditation, journaling, deep breathing)

  • Creative expression (drawing, music, writing)

  • Spending time outdoors (sunlight, fresh air, nature walks)
